The South West New Writing Network is a network of writers and producers from throughout the South West region. Since our first meeting in March 2004, we have met quarterly in different parts of the South West to update each other on what we’re doing, network, and discuss emerging issues. In addition, the network has supported local initiatives and offers wider professional development opportunities for playwrights and those working with them.
In Autumn 2005 writernet was successful in securing funds from Arts Council England and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation for a two-year programme of professional development support to writers and those working with them called Turning Heads Into Tales. As part of the Turning Heads Into Tales programme, writernet was funded to continue to administer the SWNWN. By the end of this phase of the network's development the membership of the network exceeded 170 playwrights, producers and cultural operators. In addition to organising meetings, writernet also ran a career development round table for the region's writers in October 2006, provided support to emerging initiatives and gave advice and guidance to the region's writers. The network also partnered with Exeter University on a mini-festival of new writing in the University's Drama Department in October 2007.
SWNWN The Next Stage 2008
writernet have now partnered with Theatre South West for the next stage of the SWNWN. The aim of the next phase is to significantly develop the infrastructure for new writing across the region and to fully embed new writing provision into the infrastructure for theatre created by the locality plans. The SWNWN will continue to meet throughout 2008. There will also be a series of professional development opportunities for writers and those working with them including workshops and mentoring. We will also be developing comprehensive resources for new writing in the region and working individually in each locality to identify the needs of individual writers.
