How do I get funding?

Finding funding to do B.As is difficult - particularly as local authority grants for courses in the performing arts have come under increased pressure in recent years. You will not be able to get a grant to a postgraduate course from a local authority. However, you can apply to the British Academy for a postgraduate grant. More details are available from the British Academy's website. Or write to: The British Academy, Postgraduate Studentships Office, Block 1, Spur 15, Government Buildings, Honeypot Lane, Stanmore, Middlesex, HA7 1AX.

In some special cases, postgraduate bursaries are sometimes available either from the department itself or from outside sponsors (for example, Channel 4 has financed bursaries for writers from ethnic minorities to take the Northern School of Film and Television PgDip/M.A.) but a postgraduate student cannot rely on this. It is worth remembering that most postgraduate courses cost c.£2,200 per year in fees alone. Each individual college or university should be able to provide information on sources of funding if requested.

While writernet has made every effort to ensure that the information in this guide is up-to-date and accurate, drama writing courses tend to come, go and change as erratically as the British weather, owing to student demand, funding, and tutors' other work commitments. Generally, where courses lapse, the institutions survive and may be able to suggest alternatives.

The details of course content given in the guide are generally taken from the prospectuses and therefore represent the estimation of those who teach or run the courses. They may not live up to their description. writernet would be delighted to hear the views of members who have attended any of these or similar courses for inclusion in future editions of this guide.

Where possible, the guide includes the full cost of the course, and then concessionary rates. For university level courses, fees are given for European Union (EU) nationals and those applying form outside the EU.
