The Writers Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) and Broadcasting Committee of the Society of Authors regularly negotiates with the BBC, establishing rates for dramatists. Their current agreement with BBC Radio is summarised below.


Minimum rates for writing radio drama under the 2004 WGGB/ Society of Authors / BBC Radio Drama Agreement, August 2004.



As in previous years, negotiations between the BBC, the Guild and the Society of Authors resulted in a cost-of-living increase on minimum fees. Here is the new list of rates:

Latest rates (Updates from the Radio Drama Agreement)

Original Drama rates

* £48.09 per minute (2 transmissions) or £28.28 (1 transmission)for beginners
* £73.20 per minute (2 transmissions) or £43.07 (1 transmission) for an established writer

Dramatisations (per minute)

* 65%: £31.26 (2 transmissions) or £18.38 (1 transmission) for beginners
* 65%: £47.58 (2 transmissions) or £28.00 (1 transmission) for established writers
* 75%: £36.07 (2 transmissions) or £21.21 (1 transmission) for beginners
* 75% - £54.90 (2 transmissions) or £32.30 (1 transmission) for established writers
* 85% - £40.88 (2 transmissions) or £24.04 (1 transmission) for beginners
* 85% - £62.22 (2 transmissions) or £36.61 (1 transmission) for established writers.

Daily Serial minimum rates (per episode)

* £783 when the writer provides the storyline and £592 when the storyline etc. is provided.
* The Archers new rate is £743 per episode and the rate for an episode of 'Westway' is £441.

Short Stories (per 15'00'')

* For the 1st and 2nd story the new rate is £148
* For the 3rd - 5th it is £173
* For the 6th-10th it is £197 T
* The rate for the 10th story onwards £252
* Short Stories generally established outside the BBC - £252 and generally established including the BBC - £300.

Features

* £36.02 per minute, with a minimum payment per feature of £252.14

Abridgements (per minute)

* £5.69 for a beginner
* £8.45 for an established writer.

Attendance Payment

* £43.07



Writers are entitled to the experienced writers' fee when they have written one and a half hours of either TV or radio. 170% of this fee is paid up front, as the minimum fee covers the original broadcast (at 100%) and one repeat (at 70%). A royalty of 5.6% is paid on all sales elsewhere. The Writers Guild/ Society of Authors has agreed a non-precedential one year licence for simultaneous Internet broadcast, with a value of £20,000 which will be distributed by the ALCS.
