We identified 3 potential co-production partners and liased with them to establish how we could use the dramaturgical and co-production development resources Hydroponic had to offer to make better work: developing the playwright through developing their script and increasing the chances of co-production.

1. Pursued by a Bear (PBAB), and playwright Dipo Agboluaje

Dipo’s play For One Night Only was given a pilot short regional tour not long after new PBAB Artistic Director Alex Clifton came into post. With support from Gavin Stride at the company’s base in The Maltings, Farnham, they wanted to rework the play and mount a national tour as a double bill with Letting Go a new play by Ruskhama Ahmed. They have ACE G4A funds to do this. We offered Gabriel Gbadamosi as dramaturg, some funding for the playwright, South Street in Reading as a tour date in 2008 and collaboration on how to develop the tour for both rural audiences and metropolitan ones
There was a showing of the work following 2 weeks development, at South Street on July 6th 2007

2. West Yorkshire Playhouse, and playwright David Hermanstein

David was under commission to WYP and Associate Director Alex Chisholm programmed David’s play Safe as part of this year’s Northern Exposure Festival in May 2007. We offered Gabriel as dramaturg, some funding for the playwright, South Street in Reading as a tour date and a contribution towards co-producing costs. Safe was produced at South Street on June 12th,13th and 14th 2007.

3 Jonzi D’s project Ivan

We co-commissioned Jonzi D and Jane Sekonya to develop a new piece which accompanied two existing pieces on a short pilot tour as part of Black History month in October 2006. Dramaturgical support focused on strengthening narrative and the textual elements to complement Jonzi’s movement and music strengths. The new piece was premiered at South Street on October 7th 2006.

We are at the moment considering a number of further options, now that further funding has been found thanks to Reading Borough Council, South Street and Arts council England, South East
