"I was searching for new avenues in which to find writers - writers whose work would be original, exciting, accomplished and who I could work with to develop film scripts. For a day's work the outcome has been extraordinary. I have tried to find writers and scripts in the more conventional ways - through agents, advertising in trade papers, going to see plays etc., but none of these methods has had the same level of success I am now in post production on a £2.5m feature film for Polygram, from a script which I discovered though your office."

"I have personally benefited from writernet on several occasions, the most recent being when a director contacted you regarding suitable writers for a project. The company then gained an Arts Council grant towards the cost of commissioning me to write a play, and I have now completed the script, which is scheduled to go into production in October 1998. This is directly due to writernet, its database, and staff input.”

“Our twice tested national advertising campaign (including the Guardian) had not produced the quality of candidate who could offer the combination of skills we sought. We were fortunate to be introduced to your organization and within a week you had furnished us with a lengthy list of potential candidates. We have now appointed Mike Harris and look forward enormously to having him take up his post. We were very unlikely to have discovered Mike without your support. I would recommend your service highly to anyone else seeking a writer for a short or long term project and I do know that in the course of making this appointment, we have come across some excellent people with whom we could work in the future."

Script Reading Service
Writers are offered feedback on scripts at any stage of development and can request readers with specific skills and experience. Readers are asked to consider how work might be developed further or placed. Reports on writers of promise are then added to the information made available to interested directors and producers.
"Many thanks for your astute analysis of my play. I think you've hit the nail on the head - everything you say strikes a note of truth with me. It's the best critique I've had of my writing."

writernet e-bulletin
writernet e-bulletin is a monthly compendium of information about the industry with listings for writers including requests for work, competitions, workshops, seminars, conferences, useful websites and new publications.
“writernet is a national resource.... Its bulletin feels inclusive and opens a crack in the door so the newcomer can get a feel for what's going on and learn how to be part of it. In addition there are other services - the databases, booklets etc - and these too are sensible and user-friendly.”

"Whatever happens next, the disabled writers mentoring Scheme has already provided me with a creative lifeline. By creatively empowering me it is delivering on its aims."
Peter Wolf, playwright |
" Having had many dreams before which disappeared into the night and other projects that looked or sounded good, but failed to materialise into finished articles I cannot begin to express how I feel about completing (the first draft of my play). It is hard to think of another project that has given me so much personal satisfaction and pleasure."
Jamie Beddard, actor and playwright |
"Regarding what I've received from being a mentor on this scheme … affirmation, stimulation, discussion, companionship… In many ways it has been illuminating, reminding me of my own principles, concerns, ambitions and beliefs. I also have a deep commitment to the furtherance and support of new writers and new writing. It's creating a community for ourselves - and if there's more good work being made, we all benefit."
Kaite O’Reilly, playwright

"I found working with a less experienced writer challenging and interesting and I would be happy to take part as a mentor again,... not least because it is so valuable to make contact in some structured way with other artists.... where the focus is on process rather than the product oriented "support" you tend to get from directors / dramaturgs."
